Bob & Gail's Excellent Visit

Bob and Gail Higginbotham flew up on Monday to cruise the Lake with us. We first explored downtown Burlington (Vermont's largest city) Church Street Marketplace and started our eat-a-thon. DSC02546-1

We had a great time in secluded anchorages and counted 'billions and billions' of stars in dark coves. It was nice to have company on the boat (and have someone else 'drive' it!). Vermont has had an abnormally wet summer and this week was no exception. But we didn't let the rain dampen our spirits or our fun.

One of the reasons we bought our Hobie kayaks was their stability. They are

virtually impossible top tip over. Or, so we thought! Bob joined the "man overboard" club...

We found an area on the New York shore with 200' high cliffs similar to the Palisades. We eased "Compass Rose" right up next to the stone wall and Pam reached out and touched it. Unbelievably, the depth sounder showed 183 feet of water beneath us!

In the same area we discovered a gorgeous waterfall cascading down the rocks from 200 ft.  Since it appears to be "on" only after heavy rains, it isn't even listed in the cruising guides.DSC02605

We also visited the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum with its displays of Revolutionary War ship replicas (USS Philadelphia) and area heritage.

Lake Champlain is an amazing body of water. It is the sixth largest fresh water lake in the United States (after the Great Lakes). It was a great experience swimming in fresh water in August...no sea nettles!

Of course it wasn't all play and no work for Bob.  Pictured here is Bob sitting in the dingy out in the lake (for cell/internet connectivity) submitting a proposal to the Army.
