Mid-Hudson

A very short day (10 mi) took us to Bear Mountain State Park.  We anchored in a quiet secluded cove off the river near the park's dock.  Took the dinghy in and toured the park.  What a magnificent getaway for residents of NYC!  A large lake with boat rentals, very large pool, numerous picnic areas, a carousel and a lodge.  This is also the site of John's second cousin Kristen's wedding in 2001.DSC02206

Photo: Bear Mountain Bridge.  When it was built in 1924, it was the world's largest suspension bridge.  It was also the first suspension bridge to have a concrete deck.

Well, it was quiet and idyllic during the day but, then the freight trains DSC02217 started to come...and come...and come.  Since there was a long trestle nearby, they also had to blow their horn!  Quite a restless night.

Blue crabs in the Hudson River?  Locals catch blue crabs here just like in Maryland.  Who knew?! DSC02216
